Greater Houston Youth Travel League
Submitted By Coach Jeff Tully
The Greater Houston Youth Traveling Classic league is the highest level of bowling for youth competitors. Being involved develops skill, confidence, sportsmanship, sense of commitment and best of all, a chance to get to know other bowlers in your area. I remember my youth coach in the early 80's Vicky Whitty saying "It is the creme of the crop in Texas". Many very successful collegiate bowlers were developed through the GHYTC league. GHYTC is a great league with organization rules and responsibilities that every youth bowler is required to fulfill to have the privilege to bowl.

The league bowls every other Sunday, traveling as far north as Conroe, with time off for Christmas and new year. Usually in February, there is a break in the action for bowlers to bowl in the "Generation Gap" tournament offered for the youths to bowl with coaches or parents. What a great way to spend time with the kids. This year the league fee's were $8.00 for handicap and $8.00 for scratch per bowler.
In 05'-06', Alvin Bowl were champions of the handicap division by 1/2 point, which again brings us back to the reason Alvin youth bowling is and can continue to be the very best in the area. A team commitment where all 5 team members showed their loyalty to the team with absolutely "0" absent bowlers. With each bowler receiving a point for attendance, only 1 absent bowler the whole season would have meant 2nd place. For their league championship, they each received $75 scholarships, for a total of $375.
Speaking of our fantastic youth bowlers, here they are:
GHYTC has incentives for those bowlers who maintain high averages during the season. Bowlers with 175 and above averages usually get an invitation to compete with approximately 45 other scratch bowlers in match game competition. Alvin Bowl had their first bowler in the 2 seasons of competition to get an invitation to the match games with Kenny Popham's performance in 05'-06'. Kenny's experience in match game competition will be a positive influence on him in the years to come, as the college coaches are watching.
Youth bowler's Joey Cegielski and Tyler Wetmore's first year of competition has been a success with an averages of 175 mid-way through the season. If they can maintain those averages, they could qualify for the scratch match play competition, and Tyler would be one of the youngest bowlers to qualify for the scratch match play competition.
Jarrett Fabian from Galveston, is in his first year of competition with a current average of a whopping 170.
Drew Tully's third year of competition has helped him watch his average grow from an 89 to 143 currently. 06'-07' is his first year in the scratch league competition which allows him to bowl 6 games every bowling session. In order to qualify for the scratch league, a bowler has to maintain a 140 or better average. In 05'-06', Drew saw his average improve from 89 to 127. That accomplishment allowed him to receive the most improved average male bowler award in the handicap competition by less than a tenth of a point. He also received a $45 scholarship for most improved male bowler.
Emily Tully is in her first year of competition in which she is already averaging 74 currently and is in 2nd place in most improved average female bowler. Not bad for probably the youngest bowler in the league.
These youth bowlers have done exceptionally well due to their exposure to different lane conditions at different bowling centers. We hope to grow our participation in the GHYTC league in the future with the help of our parental support with transportation to the bowling centers across the greater Houston area.
