Alvin High School Bowling Goes To State Again!

The Alvin High School Bowling Varsity program was represented well at the Texas State High School Bowling Tournamanent once again.  Shelbie New and Robert Amrhein both qualified to participate at this years state tournament based on their district averages.  This automatically placed them in the top 60 high school bowlers in the state of Texas for the 2009 bowling season.

Shelbie New got down to business and bowled a nice mid 600 series and was seeded 4th after the qualifying trials.  She ended her run in the top 16 and looks forward to doing better when she becomes a Senior in 2010.

Robert Amrhein used his bowling skills to qualify as the 8th seed after competing against the other 59 boys varsity competitors.  He wasted no time in the round of 16 and shot a decisive 289 in game 1 and then won game 2 in similar fashion.

Robert earned the chance to face the #1 seed Gregory Cook in round of 8.  He focused on the challenge and bowled a nearly perfect 290 game to win game 1 against the top seed who bowled an impressive 234 game himself.  Robert was edged out by Gregory during the final two games of the set, 197-234 and 216-246.  This barn burning epic 3 game battle came to 703 series for Robert Amrhein and 714 series for the victorious Gregory Cook.  How's that for High School Bowling?

We'd like to congratulate the 2009 Alvin High School Yellowjacket Bowlers and look forward to next season!

All Alvin Youth Bowling Events Postponed Due To Hurricane IKE

We are sorry to announce that all of the Alvin Youth Bowling events have been cancelled due to the damage to the Alvin Bowling Company caused by hurricane Ike.  They are evaluating the damage and will begin the restoration process.

On an important side note, Coach Garland New is part of the team that is currently working on restoring power for the millions of people affected by the hurricane.  Please keep Garland and the thousands of workers and volunteers that have been called on to help us recover from this disaster in your thoughts and prayers.  They are working under some very stressful situations and need our support.  Please be patient as they do their best to help us.

We all need to work together to overcome the challenges that we are currently facing.  Please look into the many ways that you can help out in the recovery effort.  You can help your neighbors, friends and family with the clean up effort or work with the many supply distribution centers located across the affected areas.

Alvin Youth Bowling Floats On By!

AlvinYouthBowling.com entered a float in the 2008 Alvin Frontier Days Parade over the weekend.  Despite the rainy weather, we had a strong showing of support from our Saturday morning USBC Youth league members as well as our Alvin High School Bowling team. They helped put our float together during the last few weeks which involved plenty of wood cutting, painting, and just plain old fun.

The main goal for this event was to generate more interest in our youth bowling program by promoting it to the general public.  With Elizabeth New behind the wheel, our coaches Garland New and Joe Ruiz Jr were able to distribute plenty of flyers, business cards, and league schedules to the kids and adults that were lined up along the parade route.  Many of them did not realize we had a Saturday morning youth bowling program or even a Alvin High School bowling team.  We hope we changed that with our parade presence and expect it to have a positive affect in our upcoming Summer league schedules.

The AlvinYouthBowling.com program would like to thank all our students and their parents for supporting us this past week and making this event a great success.

Stay tuned for our next Alvin Youth Bowling recruiting drive coming this Summer!

Alvin Varsity Boys Complete Another Great Season!

The Alvin Boys Varsity Bowling Team had taken great strides to finish just one place higher than the 2nd Place finish at last year's Texas High School State Tournament.  They practiced all year long looking to get another shot at the state title.  During the regular season, they earned the first place position in their district bowling against Clear Creek, Clear Brook, Texas City, and Pearland.  The regional tournament wasn't as easy, as the Alvin Boys had to utilize their bowling skills and team chemistry to acquire the 5th and final qualifying spot for the State Tournament.

Knowing that the state competition would be tough, they prepared to battle the other 35 teams that would be traveling from all over Texas with hopes of becoming the 2007-2008 state high school bowling champions.

The Alvin team successfully qualified as the 13th seed to enter the state championship round of 16 bracket that would lead them to the state title.  The Georgetown team would be their first round competitor.

Their first game couldn't have been more exciting as both teams completed 10 frames and still managed to end up in a tie.  The tie-breaker was to be decided by a "sudden death" one ball rolloff thrown by the lead off bowler from each team.  Alvin's Josh Greer stepped up to the challenge first with great poise and delivered a powerful attack to the pocket, but the flurry of pins somehow left the 10 pin standing.  The leadoff man from the Georgetown team was up next and delivered crushing blow to the pins leaving nothing on the deck.  Game one had been decided by a single pin against the Alvin Boys.

Game two proceeded with the Georgetown and Alvin teams taking thier best shots at each other.  The match was close, but Alvin was unable to outscore Georgetown in the final frames leaving them with an early exit from the tournament.

The 2007-2008 Alvin boys varsity team lineup of Josh Greer, Scott Stringfellow, Thayleor Francis, Robert Amrhein, Kenny Popham, Trae Elkins, and Regan O'Connor demonstrated their ability to work together and overcome many challenges throughout the year.  Their collective effort and desire enabled the Alvin Boys team to reach the state tournament 2 years in a row.  With the exception of Seniors Kenny Popham and Scott Stringfellow, these young men will be back next year to stage another run for the title.

We would like to wish Kenny and Scott continued success with their future endeavors and hope to hear from them as they take on the challenges of adulthood.  Thanks for being a part of the team and giving it your best.

Ashley Bivens Takes 2nd Place at the Texas State High School Bowling Tournament!

It seems that Ashley Bivens wasn't quite finished with her high school bowling accomplishments this year. After helping the Girls Alvin Yellowjackets Team to 2nd Place finish yesterday, she stepped back on to the lanes for the Singles competition today.

Her three game qualifying series of 635 got her into the round of 16 bracket.  She steadily made her way to the final round with her consistent pocket delivery.  Reaching the finals was familiar territory for her after being crowned the state champion for the previous 2006-2007 season.

Ashley proved that the previous year was no fluke and was given a chance to defend her title against Danielle Walker from Central High School in the final match.  The two young ladies both tried to capture the win with some high quality bowling.  Ashley had a quick start, but Danielle was able to jump into the lead late in the game and held on for the victory for the state title.  Our best wishes go out Danielle for having a great tournament this year.

The Alvin Youth Bowling program would like to congratulate Ashley Bivens for demonstrating another solid performance at the Texas State High School Bowling tournament.  She has represented the Alvin High School Bowling team very well during its young 2-year program with great success.  She will be heading to college next year and will make a fine addition to any collegiate bowling program.  We look forward to reporting on her future accomplishments.  Good luck Ashley!

(March 29, 2008)
Congratulations to the Alvin Lady Jackets For Taking 2nd Place at the Texas State High School Bowling Tournament!

The Alvin Girls Varsity Bowling Team had already achieved a successful season by finishing first in the district and first in their regional event this year.  They practiced all year round not knowing how long their season would last, but the season continued because of their dedication to each other which formed a strong team bond that could not be broken.

From the 34 teams that participated in the state high school bowling tournament today, 18 would be eliminated after the qualifying round. The Alvin Girls Varsity team wasted no time and shot out of the gate with precision bowling and teamwork.  They completed their 3 game qualifying block with an impressive team score of 2480 that positioned them as the 5th seed of the 16 seeded bracket.

They initially faced the 12th seeded Texas City girls team, also from their home district, in the first round and quickly dispatched them in a two game sweep. The quarterfinal round placed them against the tough Plano West girls team who pushed the Alvin team to a third and final game.  The Alvin ladies stepped up their game and took the victory.  The semifinal round against the Allen girls team would also prove to be a challenge as they split the first two games as well.  Once again, the Alvin ladies got together and put down another solid game to move them into the finals.

The final match against the Madison girls team would be the most exciting match of the tournament. The Madison team bowled a very nice 200+ game that got Alvin's attention.  Alvin, never backing down throughout the year, replied with a unified team effort forcing the Madison team to bowl a third and final game to determine the girls team baker format state champion.

The third game came down to the wire as both teams stayed close to each other all the way into the 10th frame.  Both teams showed their pride, stood toe-to-toe and played a smooth and steady game.  When the dust finally cleared, the Madison girls had won the state championship by 7 pins.

The Alvin team held their heads high and congratulated the Madison girls and coaches for their victory with respect and great sporstmanship.

The Alvin coaches would like to thank the Alvin girls team (Destiny Mills, Kayleen Wisenbaler, Lauren Hughes, Shelbie New, Rachel Poynter, Ashley Bivens) for believing in us and working hard throughout the season.  Most of these young ladies will be graduating this year and beginning the next phase in their life.  We are very proud of them for their accomplishments and we wish them continued success in the future.

The quality of high school bowling continues to improve every year with dedicated bowlers, coaches, and shool officials striving to evolve this club sport into a fully recognized UIL sport.  For more information, please read the "Texas Bowlers angle for state sanctioning" story.

Alvin High School Bowling Teams Are State Bound!!

The 2007-2008 season will continue for the Alvin High School Varsity Bowling program. Both the girls and boys teams qualified for the Texas State High School Bowling Tournament at todays regional event.

The girls team received top honors by placing first with a very smooth and steady effort. Their consistent game play pulled them away from the pack throughout the 10 game round-robin baker format competition leaving them nearly untouchable.

The boys team had to dig deep and utilize a collective effort to finish in the 5th position. They regrouped and took up the challenge by bowling a 223 game in the position round. That was just enough to clinch a spot for the state tournament. Their valiant effort displayed their true desire to extend the season.

The coaches Cheryl Copley, Garland New, and Joe Ruiz Jr are very proud that both teams were able to advance further into the season. The weekly practice sessions will continue in preparation for the Texas High School State Bowling Tournament which will be held at Copperfield Bowl on March 29th and 30th.

Both teams would like to thank the parents for attending and showing their support for the Alvin High School Bowling program.

2007-2008 Alvin High School Bowling Teams Headed To Regionals

The Alvin High School girls and boys Varsity Bowling teams have qualified to participate in the Regional High School Bowling tournament again this year. The Reqion VIII Texas High School Bowling Tournament will be held at Copperfield Bowl on March 1st at 1:00PM.
This tournament will feature the top 10 Houston area High School Bowling teams that will be competing for an invitation to the Texas State High School Championship Tournament on March 31. The competition will be fierce as only 5 teams will get their chance to move toward that goal.

Last year's results set a high standard to improve upon. The Alvin boys and girls Varsity teams qualified for the Texas High School State Bowling Tournament in 2007 and had a very successful inaugural year. Ashley Bivens achieved a 1st Place finish and became recognized as the Best Female High School Bowler in the state of Texas for the 2006-2007 season. The Alvin High School Boys Varsity team also staged an impressive run to the finals and earned a 2nd place finish in the baker format competition.

Be sure to come out and support our Alvin High Yellowjacket boys and girls as they make a statement that Alvin High School bowling is here to stay! Go JACKETS!!!

2007-2008 Alvin High School Bowling District Results
Varsity Girls 14-2
Varsity Boys 11-5

The Alvin Boys and Girls Varsity Bowling teams closed out the regular season by sweeping their last 3 district matches this week. The next two weeks will be spent preparing for the regional tournament. We will be focusing on bowling drills and lane management. This will help the teams prepare for the tough lane conditions that only a 10 game baker format round-robin can create.

2008 Winter League Mini-Camp

This season, the Alvin coaches will be conducting several Bowling Mini-Camp sessions during the Winter Leagues. These sessions will focus on bowling etiquette, pre-shot routine, delivery, and targeting. We will be using several training aids to keep the lessons very entertaining for our students.

These lessons will help our students obtain a better understanding of the bowling fundamentals that they can build on for years to come.

Alvin Youth Bowling Coaches Obtain USBC Level 1 Coaching Certification

Garland New, Jeff Tully, Joe Ruiz Jr., and Joe Ruiz Sr. participated in the USBC Level 1 Coaching class being held at the Texas City Star Lanes today.  The USBC Instructor, Tom Little, did an excellent job teaching them how to become better coaches with his course.

The class began with on-lane instruction after the coaches selected their house shoes and house bowling balls.  What they didn't realize is that they were going to bowl with the "other" hand to fully understand how it feels to bowl for the very first time.  Bowling left-handed was very unnatural for the right-handed bowlers and it provided them with a way to feel as some of their students do!  They had to break down the components of their delivery and rebuild it using the basic fundamentals that Instructor Little identified.  After several different scenarios, the coaches were able to take a 4-step approach and get the ball out on the lane with their left hand!  The remainder of the course was held in a classroom setting.

These new coaching methods and techniques will be phased in throughout the upcoming leagues to further improve the Alvin Youth Bowling Program.  All of the coaches passed the final exam and will be receiving their Level 1 Coaching Certificates in the near future.  They now join Richard Temple, who obtained his Bronze Level certification last year.

Having both the Girls and Boys Varsity teams qualify at the regional tournament along with Ashley Bivens and Robert Amrhein being invited based on their season high averages in the district meant that Alvin would be represented in every event at the state tournament. This is the goal that all bowling teams aspire to reach at the end of the season.  What makes this even more incredible is that this is Alvin's first year with a High School program!  Way to go Alvin!  Be sure and thank the coaches and parents for their support throughout the season!  We'll be back and stronger than ever next year!
